Granite is an igneous rock formed from cooled magma. Understanding how it moves from the quarry to a finished slab helps buyers ask better questions about quality and consistency.
Extraction
Large blocks are separated from the rock face using drilling, diamond-wire cutting or controlled methods, then lifted out and squared. The quality of the block, including cracks, veins and colour consistency, largely decides the quality of everything cut from it.
Cutting and finishing
Blocks are cut into slabs with gang saws or block cutters. Slabs are then polished, honed, flamed or brushed, and may be cut into tiles, steps or custom sizes. Each stage can introduce differences in thickness and surface, so a written specification matters.
What buyers should check
- Colour and pattern consistency across the batch
- Thickness and size tolerance
- Surface finish and edge quality
- Packing method for the destination
