FOB, CIF and CFR: Shipping Terms Explained for Stone Buyers

A plain-language explanation of the shipping terms you will see on a natural stone quotation.

Stone is heavy, so freight is a large part of the landed cost. The shipping term on your quotation decides who pays for what and where responsibility passes from seller to buyer.

The common terms

  • FOB (Free on Board): the seller delivers the goods on board the vessel at the named port. The buyer arranges and pays for ocean freight.
  • CFR (Cost and Freight): the seller pays freight to the destination port; risk passes once goods are on board.
  • CIF (Cost, Insurance and Freight): as CFR, plus the seller arranges minimum insurance.
  • EXW (Ex Works): the buyer collects from the seller’s premises and handles everything after.

Choosing a term

FOB suits buyers who have their own freight forwarder. CFR or CIF suits buyers who want one quotation to the destination port. Whichever you choose, agree it in writing and name the port.

Confirm the details

These terms are published by the International Chamber of Commerce as Incoterms. Check the current rules and confirm details with your freight forwarder or customs broker.
