Slate for Roofing and Flooring: What Buyers Should Know

Why slate splits into thin layers, where it performs well and what to specify.

Slate is a fine-grained metamorphic rock that splits naturally into thin, flat layers. That property makes it useful for roofing, flooring and wall cladding.

Where slate works well

Slate is used for roof tiles, floor tiles, steps, wall cladding and landscaping. Its natural cleft surface gives texture and grip, which suits both interiors and exteriors.

Natural variation

Colour, texture and thickness vary by quarry and by batch. Calibrated products are cut to a consistent thickness, while natural-cleft products vary more. Approve a sample or reference photographs before ordering.
