Quartzite, granite and marble are often shown side by side, yet they form differently and perform differently.
How they form
Granite is an igneous rock that crystallised from magma. Marble is limestone changed by heat and pressure. Quartzite is sandstone changed in the same way into a very hard rock.
In use
- Granite: hard, durable, widely used for worktops and paving.
- Quartzite: very hard and heat resistant, with a marble-like appearance in some varieties.
- Marble: classic veining, but softer and sensitive to acids.
