Packing Natural Stone Tiles and Slabs for Export

Packing methods that protect stone on a long sea journey, and what to agree in advance.

Natural stone is heavy and can chip or crack if packed poorly. Good packing protects the cargo and avoids disputes after delivery.

Common methods

  • Tiles: cartons or wooden crates on pallets, with separators between pieces
  • Slabs: bundles on A-frames or crates, with protection on the edges
  • Paving and cobbles: bags, crates or pallets, strapped and wrapped

Wood and documentation

Wooden packaging used in international trade usually has to meet the ISPM 15 standard on treated wood. Confirm the requirements of your destination country before shipping.

Agree before shipping

Confirm packing type, quantity per pack and marking in writing, so that everyone knows what a correct delivery looks like.
